New York Film Critics Circle Awards

One of the last MAJOR critics awards gives us its winners today, just before the star-loving HFPA release the Golden Globe nominations tomorrow. After starting to fade, Annette Bening got a much needed boost by winning Best Actress here, along with co-star Mark Ruffalo, who has a decent shot at a Supporting Actor nomination. Also worth noting is the fact that The Illusionist actually won an animated film award over Toy Story 3; pretty remarkable. In Best Actor, Colin Firth scored a valuable win in his battle to the finish line with James Franco. And as for picture/director, despite all of the initial doubt, The Social Network has officially emerged as the critical favorite of the year (for the time being at least).
