Golden Satellite Nominations

Apparently they felt like REALLY expanding the categories this year. Seriously, these lineups are insane.

1. Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama

a. NICOLE KIDMAN, RABBIT HOLE LIONSGATE FILMS
b. JENNIFER LAWRENCE, WINTER’S BONE ROADSIDE ATTRACTIONS
c. HELEN MIRREN, THE TEMPEST TOUCHSTONE PICTURES
d. NATALIE PORTMAN, BLACK SWAN, FOX SEARCHLIGHT
e. NOOMI RAPACE, THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO, MUSIC BOX FILMS
f. TILDA SWINTON, I AM LOVE MAGNOLIA PICTURES
g. NAOMI WATTS, FAIR GAME, SUMMIT ENTERTAINMENT

h. MICHELLE WILLIAMS, BLUE VALENTINE THE WEINSTEIN COMPANY

Well I guess it had to happen eventually: the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo fanaticism has finally breached awards season. It's also surprising to see Mirren on here. The Tempest hasn't exactly received the greatest reviews. The more I think about it, the more I've come to like Tilda Swinton's work in I am Love, even if I think the film's OMG PRETTY THINGS-style undermines her, so I don't mind seeing her here.

2. Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama
a. JAVIER BARDEM, BIUTIFUL FOCUS FEATURES
b. LEONARDO DICAPRIO, INCEPTION WARNER BROS. PICTURES
c. MICHAEL DOUGLAS, SOLITARY MAN ANCHOR BAY FILMS
d. ROBERT DUVALL, GET LOW SONY PICTURES CLASSICS
e. JESSE EISENBERG, THE SOCIAL NETWORK COLUMBIA PICTURES
f. COLIN FIRTH, THE KING’S SPEECH THE WEINSTEIN COMPANY
g. JAMES FRANCO, 127 HOURS FOX SEARCHLIGHT
h. RYAN GOSLING, BLUE VALENTINE THE WEINSTEIN COMPANY

I don't know why I keep forgetting about Javier Bardem, even when the role seems strong enough and baity enough to attract major awards attention. And even though Michael Douglas may be up here for Solitary Man, I'm still not convinced that he's a legitimate contender. The same goes for DiCaprio in Inception, and I'm surprised that he made it in for this over Shutter Island...sort of. He was bound to show up somewhere in awards season for one of the performances; he's certainly had a veeeery solid year both critically and commercially, no easy feat.

3. Actress in a Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical
a. ANNETTE BENING, THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT FOCUS FEATURES
b. ANNE HATHAWAY, LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS 20TH CENTURY FOX
c. SALLY HAWKINS, MADE IN DAGENHAM SONY PICTURES CLASSICS
d. CATHERINE KEENER, PLEASE GIVE SONY PICTURES CLASSICS
e. JULIANNE MOORE, THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT FOCUS FEATURES
f. MARY-LOUISE PARKER, RED SUMMIT ENTERTAINMENT
g. MARISA TOMEI, CYRUS FOX SEARCHLIGHT

Alright, silly rant time: That should be Rebecca Hall up there for Please Give, not Catherine Keener (not that she wasn't good). There's a very tiny chance that this film will make a (tiny) dent in awards season, and I'd hate for one of my favorite performances of the year thus far to go totally unrecognized. As for the rest, pretty predictable outside of Mary Louise-Parker.

4. Actor in a Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical

a. STEVE CARELL, DINNER FOR SCHMUCKS PARAMOUNT PICTURES
b. MICHAEL CERA, SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD, UNIVERSAL PICTURES
c. ROMAIN DURIS, HEARTBREAKER IFC FILMS
d. ANDY GARCIA, CITY ISLAND ANCHOR BAY FILMS
e. JAKE GYLLENHAAL, LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS 20TH CENTURY FOX
f. JOHN MALKOVICH, RED SUMMIT ENTERTAINMENT
g. JOHN C. REILLY, CYRUS FOX SEARCHLIGHT

5. Actress in a Supporting Role
a. AMY ADAMS, THE FIGHTER PARAMOUNT PICTURES
b. MARION COTILLARD, INCEPTION WARNER BROS. PICTURES
c. ANNE-MARIE DUFF, NOWHERE BOY THE WEINSTEIN COMPANY
d. VANESSA REDGRAVE, LETTERS TO JULIET SUMMIT ENTERTAINMENT
e. ROSAMUND PIKE, BARNEY’S VERSION, SONY PICTURES CLASSICS
f. KRISTIN SCOTT THOMAS, NOWHERE BOY THE WEINSTEIN COMPANY
g. JACKI WEAVER, ANIMAL KINGDOM, SONY PICTURES CLASSICS
h. DIANNE WIEST, RABBIT HOLE LIONSGATE FILMS

I never really expected to see either of the Inception ladies nominated for anything, so Cotillard's definitely a surprise here, along with Vanessa Redgrave for what was apparently a rather 'blah' rom-com. However, this category does give me one reason to grin: Animal Kingdom's Jacki Weaver. Hopefully this is the start of an increasingly prominent role in the supporting actress race for Weaver.

6. Actor in a Supporting Role
a. CHRISTIAN BALE, THE FIGHTER, PARAMOUNT PICTURES
b. PIERCE BROSNAN THE GHOST WRITER, SUMMIT ENTERTAINMENT

c. ANDREW GARFIELD, THE SOCIAL NETWORK, COLUMBIA PICTURES

d. TOMMY LEE JONES, THE COMPANY MEN, THE WEINSTEIN COMPANY e. BILL MURRAY, GET LOW, SONY PICTURES CLASSICS
f. SEAN PENN, FAIR GAME, SUMMIT ENTERTAINMENT
g. JEREMY RENNER, THE TOWN WARNER BROS. PICTURES
h. GEOFFREY RUSH, THE KING’S SPEECH THE WEINSTEIN COMPANY

7. Motion Picture, Drama
a. 127 HOURS, FOX SEARCHLIGHT
b. ANIMAL KINGDOM, SONY PICTURES CLASSICS
c. BLUE VALENTINE, THE WEINSTEIN COMPANY
d. GET LOW, SONY PICTURES CLASSICS
e. THE GHOST WRITER, SUMMIT ENTERTAINMENT
f. INCEPTION WARNER BROS. PICTURES
g. THE KING’S SPEECH THE WEINSTEIN COMPANY
h. THE SOCIAL NETWORK COLUMBIA PICTURES
i. THE TOWN WARNER BROS. PICTURES
j. WINTER’S BONE, ROADSIDE ATTRACTIONS

A BIG yay for Animal Kingdom (and a smaller yay for The Ghost Writer). I'm surprised that something like True Grit (which is earning fantastic early reviews) or Black Swan didn't make it in over the likes of The Town, though. Come to think of it, True Grit isn't anywhere on here. Maybe screeners weren't sent to the right people soon enough?

8. Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical
a. CYRUS, FOX SEARCHLIGHT
b. THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT, FOCUS FEATURES
c. MADE IN DAGENHAM, SONY PICTURES CLASSICS
d. THE OTHER GUYS COLUMBIA PICTURES
e. PLEASE GIVE SONY PICTURES CLASSICS
f. RED, SUMMIT ENTERTAINMENT
g. SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD, UNIVERSAL PICTURES

The Scott Pilgrim and Please Give nominations are great, but the nomination for The Other Guys pisses me off to no end. With the exception of one or two scenes, it was a terrible misfire, and I don't understand why it received the reviews it did, or why it's viewed as a comedic comeback for Will Farrell.

9. Motion Picture, Foreign Language Film
a. BIUTIFUL (MEXICO)
b. THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO, (SWEDEN)
c. I AM LOVE, (ITALY)
d. MOTHER (KOREA)

f. JAMES NEWTON HOWARD, SALT, COLUMBIA PICTURES
g. TRENT REZNOR AND ATTICUS ROSS, THE SOCIAL NETWORK, COLUMBIA PICTURES
h. HARRY GREGSON-WILLIAMS, UNSTOPPABLE, 20th CENTURY FOX

I love seeing that three of my favorite scores of the year are up here (Rahman, Desplat, and Zimmer). At the same time, I'm not sure how the score from Unstoppable made it. It was routine and, at least in the theater I saw it in, it sounded dingy.

Weirdly enough, I actually love the editing nomination for Please Give. I remember watching that film and thinking that it was extremely well paced, and that by the time it was over, I wanted it to keep going because of how caught up I was (the same goes for The Social Network). It's not the sort of film that would usually get nominated for editing, and I'm thrilled that International Press Academy recognized it.
