Who got a boost?:
- Shockingly, Australia. No, not for Picture, Director, or the Acting awards, but for the artistic and technical awards, which it has been curiously shut out of. The film actually received a total of 9 nominations, making it the most nominated of the year here. Most surprising though, is that it picked up Visual Effects, something that Iron Man probably has in the bag.
- The Duchess. Another film curiously shut out of artistic awards, its Costume Design award may help remind Academy voters of not only its beauty, but maybe its performances....
- Slumdog Millionaire and Happy-Go-Lucky for Best Picture.
- "Another Way to Die" for Best Original Song.
- Ricky Gervais for Ghost Town. Will this go anywhere? Not a chance, but it's nice to see that he got SOMETHING.
- Angelina Jolie for Best Actress. ARGH!!!
- Richard Jenkins for Best Actress. ARGH! Whereas Jolie overracted to no affect, Jenkins was so "subtle" that he practically didn't act at all. But apparently, that's all you need to do in order for your work to be deemed a "masterfully restrained performance". Yuck.
- Michael Shannon for Best Supporting Actor. For him to not only be nominated but also win is HUGE, considering that Revolutionary Road got nothing else.
- Rosemarie DeWitt for Best Supporting Actress.
Who got hurt?:
- The Curious Case of Benjamin Button in all categories.
- Anne Hathaway for Best Actress. She only has one or two awards. Could she best losing momentum?
