Paris Je T'aime(2007) - REVIEW
a delightful surprise of a movie. The concept is simple: a slew of directors (both famous and unknown) direct 16 completely unrelated vignettes in their own style with only one requirement: set them in Paris, the official City of Love. Though some are better than others (the first one is completely forgettable) none are bad (though that Elijah Wood Vampire thing was pretty bizarre). It's amazing how much emotion is sometimes squeezed into these little short films, particularly in the segments involving Miranda Richardson and Juliette Binoche. Despite their brief running time, some of them manage to pull of little twists, each one of them effective. The film(s?) end with easily the best segment: a woman (Margo Martindale, who played Hillary Swank's redneck mom in Million Dollar Baby) recounting her visit to Paris to her adult French class. With charm, with, humor, and bittersweetness, Paris Je T'aime may not be the greatest film of the year, but it's certainly a wonderful little gem filled with surprises.
Grade: B+
