Next Year's Best Picture Front Runner

Last night's episode of SNL, with host Russell Brand, had one of the show's best mock trailers in quite some time. The sketch took aim at consonant-deprived British accents with hilarious results. But the most inspired part (aside from the title) was the voice over, which made reference to, of all British crime films, the woefully under-seen Red Riding Trilogy. I realize that I part of a very smaaaaall group of people (Stateside, at least) who know what the RRT is, but it was fun to have a little movie-geek inside joke to add another layer of funny to this well-executed sketch.

Start your Sunday with some Church Chat:

Last night Dana Carvey hosted SNL, and we were given one of the most consistently hilarious episodes in a long time. Even the last half hour, where sketches tend to become flimsy or just plain weird, remained strong. Really, the only thing wrong was that musical guest Linkin Park was absolutely awful. But even they weren't enough to ruin strong sketch after strong sketch. But nothing was better than the nearly 9 minute "Church Lady" sketch, which featured great parodies of the Kardashian sisters ("I'm Khloe, and I'm third!") and Snooki. Even the gratuitous Justin Bieber appearance couldn't ruin the sketch or the episode as a whole:

Video of the Week: The Return of Judy Grimes

Last night brought us the return of Saturday Night Live, which had quite a challenge: live up to the high standard set by the previous election-charged season. Adding to the apprehension was the fact that the show was hosted by Megan Fox, who is known more for her looks than for her acting talent (let alone comedic skill). So how did SNL fare in its season premiere? Actually pretty well, with the best sketches coming in the first half of the show. Fox never had to do much to truly stretch herself save for an airplane sketch with Kristen Wiig, but she carried herself just fine through the evening. Not surprising, however, was that Kristen Wiig was better than ever, and her shining moment is this week's Video of the Week. Just kidding...

Saturday Night Live Premier PENELOPE

The super competitive Penelope from SNL as hilariously portrayed by Kristen Wiig. This was from the recent SNL season premiere with host Lebron James.
